Audit in clinical practice has become well established as a method of improving quality of patient care. Several important national audit projects have been completed by the College Audit Unit and the considerable time and effort contributed by Fellows and Members is very much appreciated.
Although this national audit function is important, we should not lose sight of the need to audit our own practice so that we might compare it with the national standards. This must be carried out in a suitable, impersonal and academic atmosphere so that confidence and confidentiality may be maintained. In addition to analysing our results of treatment, we should continue to examine individual problem cases and critical incidents. Time should be provided for this type of audit at local meetings.
