VENUE:

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists held its Annual Congress at the Manchester International Convention Centre, The G-Mex Centre, Manchester M2 3GX.

The Congress was open from Tuesday 11th to Thursday 13th May 2004.

Eponymous lectures:
  • Ashton Lecture: Preservation of the trabecular meshworkk cell population a possible therapeutic direction? Delivered by Professor Ian Grierson, University of Liverpool
  • Bowman Lecture: Optic Nerve Axons life and death before birth. Delivered by Mr. David Taylor, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London
  • Edridge Green Lecture: High magnification imaging and functional investigations of the living human eye. Delivered by Professor Fred Fitzke, Institute of Ophthalmology, London
Scientific sessions:
New for 2004 the Scientific sessions were more interactive than in previous years and encouraged delegate participation and a forum for debate.

Seminars for allied professions:
There was full day seminars for optometrists, ophthalmic nurses, and orthoptists.

  • Ophthalmic nurses: Chaired by Mr. Peter Shah, Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre
  • Optometrists: Chaired by Dr. Robert Harper, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital
  • Orthoptists: Chaired by Mr. Luis Amaya, Kent County Ophthalmic and Aural Hospital, Maidstone, Kent

Rapid-fire sessions:
Abstracts were judged and the top 30 were selected as free papers for oral presentation in a rapid-fire session. Rigorous timekeeping was enforced. Each paper in these sessions consisted of a 3-minute oral presentation and 3 minute discussion. Authors were asked to nominate with their submission one or more experts in their field to act as discussants.

The winner of the Foulds Trophy for the best paper was Jane Wallace for her paper 'Endoscopic probing for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction'.

Poster sessions:
The Scientific Committee mandated the acceptance of a greater number of submissions for 2004. The poster exhibition took on a new look with authors presenting for one day only rather than the duration of the Congress. There were dedicated poster viewing sessions and the authors were required to stand by their posters at allocated times.

The Royal Eye Hospital (London) prize was won by Mr Sean Chen for his poster 'Patterns of visual loss and recovery in childhood amblyopia: a longitudinal, prospective treatment study'.

The Royal Eye Hospital (Manchester) prize was won by Miss Angela Rees for her poster 'Prospective study of the use of NHS ophthalmic accident and emergency by refractive surgery patients'.

Video presentations:
The video presentations were judged and one or more successful videos could be selected for showing in the rapid-fire session. Successful videos has to be submitted in DVD format.

The Treacher Collins video prize was won by Dr T R Rutili and Professor G Gini for their video 'The use of vitrectomy and infliximab treatment: a combined approach in sight threatening uveitis associated with Bechets syndrome'.

COMMERCIAL EXHIBITION:


A comprehensive commercial exhibition was open to all registered delegates throughout the Congress.
