INTRODUCTION

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists held its Annual Congress at the International Convention Centre, Broad Street, Birmingham from Tuesday 17th to Thursday 19th May 2005.

Eponymous Lecturers:


Edridge Green Lecture
This lecture was founded under the will of Mr Frederick William Edridge-Green in 1953 as one or more lectures annually on vision or colour vision. A bronze medal is presented to the lecturer.

The 2005 Edridge Green Lecture 'Light and Biological Clocks: The Discovery of a New Class of Ocular Photoreceptor' was delivered by Russell G. Foster BSc PhD, Professor of Molecular Neuroscience and Deputy Chair of the Department of Visual Neurosciences at Imperial College Faculty of Medicine, London.

Duke Elder Lecture
This lecture was established in 1978 to commemorate the work of Sir Stewart Duke-Elder. It is given every two years and a bronze medal is presented to the lecturer.

The 2005 Duke Elder Lecture 'Corneal Epithelial Wound Healing: The Evolution of an Observation' was delivered by Harminder Dua MBBS DO FRCS FRCOphth MD PhD, Chair and Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham.

CASANOVA AND THE SPITFIRE PILOTS


Released at the recent The Royal College of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress, the DVD 'Casanova and the Spitfire pilots' was very well received. The DVD is a teaching video describing the invention and development of the IOL.

The DVD was produced at Moorfields Eye Hospital in the bicentennial year by Hugh Williams and Alan Lacey. The 45 minute DVD is freely available to all College Members and Fellows from:
