THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF OPHTHALMOLOGISTS ANNUAL CONGRESS, LIVERPOOL 2010

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists held its Annual Congress 2010 at the ACC, Liverpool. The scientific programme was packed with sessions that appealed to everyone, with integrated sessions aimed at all abilities. Our first Retina Day to be held at Congress was a great success.

We would like to extend our thanks to all speakers, delegates and exhibitors who attended.

The total CPD allocation for Congress is 33 points: Retina Day (Monday) 7.5 points, Tuesday 9 points, Wednesday 9.5 points and Thursday 7 points.

Prize Winners 2010

The Foulds Trophy
The Foulds Trophy is awarded to the best rapid fire presentation at Congress. This year's winner was S S Zahar for her paper 'Prolongation of mouse corneal allograft survival following systematic and topical 3-hydroxykynurenine administration.'

The Treacher Collins Prize
The Treacher Collins Prize is awarded to the best DVD presented at Congress. This year's winner was K Waddell for the DVD 'Bilamallar rotation for trachomatous trichiasis: a new surgical clamp and training programme.'

The Royal Eye Hospital London and Manchester Prizes
The Royal Eye Hospital London and Manchester Prizes are awarded to the posters achieving the highest marks during the poster judging at Congress.

The Royal Eye Hospital (London) Prize was awarded to Z I Carrim for the poster 'First year experience of chemotherapy for advanced retinoblastoma in Tanzania: disease profile and outcomes in 2008.'

The Royal Eye Hospital (Manchester) Prize was awarded to D Nguyen for the poster 'A study using SERVQUAL to evaluate patients expectations and perceptions of the quality of an outpatient glaucoma service'

The BINOC (British Isles Neuro-ophthalmology Club) Ivor Levy Prize
The Ivor Levy Prize is awarded to the best neuro-ophthalmology poster. This year's winner was D Mansfield for the poster 'Delayed diagnosis of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) in Scotland.'

The AMO Prize 2010
The AMO Prize is awarded to one of the top two abstracts obtaining the highest marks overall during the judging process. This year's winner was M Moosajee for her paper 'Non-viral gene therapy for choroideraemia using a novel S-MAR vector which exhibits persistent episomal expression in the RPE'.

The SOE Prize 2010
The SOE Prize is awarded by the Societas Ophthalmologica Europaea (SOE) to one of the top two abstracts obtaining the highest marks overall during the judging process. This year's winner was K Wong for her paper 'Semi-automated digital image analysis of retina in preterm infants with and without retinopathy of prematurity: a comparison of different vessel selection methods'.

Commercial Exhibition Prize
A prize shield is awarded to the best stand at Congress. The shield commemorates the work of Desmond Wright who was Exhibition Director of Optic UK from 1984 until 1993. Stands are judged in terms of equipment shown, supporting literature and the presentation of items displayed by the staff. We are pleased to announce that the year the shield was awarded to Carl Zeiss.
