ANNUAL CONGRESS 2010

Mr Mark Batterbury, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, has won free registration for Congress 2010 after his 2009 Congress feedback questionnaire was picked at random by our President, John Lee.

PRIZE WINNERS:



Dr. Mariya Moosajee
has won the AMO Prize for her paper 'Non-viral gene therapy for choroideraemia using a novel S-MAR vector which exhibits persistent episomal expression in the RPE'. This prize is awarded to one of the top two abstracts obtaining the highest marks overall during the judging process.





Dr. Karen Wong
has won the SOE Prize for her paper 'Semi-automated digital image analysis of retina in preterm infants with and without retinopathy of prematurity: a comparison of different vessel selection methods'. This prize is awarded by the Societas Ophthalmologica Europaea (SOE) to one of the top two abstracts obtaining the highest marks overall during the judging process.

PRIZE WINNERS:

The Nettleship Medal

The Nettleship Medal is awarded for the best piece of original work by a British ophthalmologist published in any journal in the last three years.

We were very pleased to award the medal to Professor Andrew Lotery for his paper 'Association between the SERPING1 gene and age related macular degeneration: a two stage case control study'

The Foulds Trophy

The trophy is a silver quaiche donated by the first President of the College, Professor Wallace Foulds for the best basic science oral presentation. The prize winner also received £250 from Professor Foulds. The trophy is held by the winner for one year.

This year's winner was M. Moosajee for the paper 'The use of anti-apoptotic agents, curcumin and zVAD-fmk, as potential therapies for ocular coloboma in the zebrafish model'.

Royal Eye Hospital Poster Prizes

There are two prizes of £250 each awarded for the top two posters presented at Congress. Posters were judged at Congress and based on content, presentation and discussion held with the author.

Royal Eye Hospital (London) Winner:

The Royal Eye Hospital (London) Prize was awarded to S. Roy Chowdhury for 'Metabolic profiles affecting the 5 year incidence of Diabetic Retinopathy in type 2 diabetes'.

Royal Eye Hospital (Manchester) Winner:

The Royal Eye Hospital (Manchester) Prize was awarded to M. Hawker for 'Detecting Glaucoma in Binocular Patients using the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph: The Bridlington Eye Assessment Project'.

Treacher Collins Prize

A certificate and £250 was awarded for the best DVD in the DVD exhibition at Congress. The prize was judged by the Honorary Programme Secretary prior to Congress.

This was awarded to T. Eke for the DVD ''Face to face' upright seated position for cataract surgery in patients who cannot lie flat'.

Commercial Exhibition Prize A prize shield is awarded to the best stand at Congress. The shield commemorates the work of Desmond Wright who was Exhibition Director of Optic UK from 1984 until 1993. Stands are judged in terms of equipment shown, supporting literature and the presentation of items displayed by the staff. We are pleased to announce that the shield was awarded to Spectrum Thea.

A British Ophthalmological Surveillance Unit (BOSU) Study of Traumatic Optic Neuropathy in the UK R L Ford, V Lee, W Xing, C Bunce, B Foot,Central Middlesex Hospital

NEW: The British Isles Neuro-Ophthalmology Club (BINOC) Ivor Levy Prize

This prize has been awarded for the first time at the Congress 2008. Ivor Levy was an eminent London neuro-ophthalmologist and a long standing member of BINOC. A prize of £200 was given for the best neuro-ophthalmology poster by a trainee.
