Blood Borne Viral Infections and Ophthalmic Surgery
Any ophthalmologist who has
experienced a needle-stick injury whilst operating will have had cause to
reflect on the risks of transmission of blood-borne viral infections between
surgeon and patient. This paper aims to
provide a synopsis of current guidance and published research on safe practice
for minimising the risks of transmission of infection during surgery, from the
ophthalmologist's perspective. It also
provides advice for ophthalmic surgeons who are HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C
positive in relation to continuing surgical practice.
