Schools of Ophthalmology

Deaneries in England and Wales are looking at and implementing the development of a new management structure in the form of Schools of postgraduate medical training.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Lead Dean for Ophthalmology recommend that Ophthalmology is a single School.

The main purpose of a School is to:

• Advise the Deanery on all matters relating to postgraduate training in Ophthalmology
• Quality assurance of postgraduate training in Ophthalmology
• Work with the RCOphth - the Head of School is a joint appointment by the Deanery and the College
• Work with local commissioners and Service providers such as SHAs, PCTs, and Trusts

For smaller Deaneries the structure and personnel of a School may not be significantly different from the present Specialist Training Committee in Ophthalmology. For larger Deaneries there may be significant differences to the present structures.
