Applications are now open for the 2020 John Lee Primer Fellowship Award, presented in partnership with Fight for Sight. The award is open to trainee ophthalmologists who are members of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, to support the pursuit of ophthalmic and vision research. The closing date for applications is 5pm on Thursday 7 November, for an expected fellowship start date of October 2020.

This prestigious fellowship is designed to support early stage ophthalmologists to undertake ground-breaking vision research and presents the first step for ophthalmologists to obtain a PhD. The successful applicants will receive £60,000, jointly funded by Fight for Sight and the College, to pursue a research project and be provided with experience and exposure to a research environment. The one-year funding grant can be put towards salary for the applicant, consumables, equipment, open access publications costs and other expenses such as travel incurred during the research project.

Applications are invited from trainee ophthalmologists wishing to undertake research which aims to:

  • Increase our understanding of how eye diseases and conditions start and develop
  • Prevent eye diseases and conditions occurring
  • Enable eye diseases and conditions to be detected earlier
  • Develop new and improved treatments for eye diseases and conditions

It is expected that applications will be submitted by trainees currently affiliated with a UK academic or medical institution and the application will be created in collaboration with a research Mentor.

The shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview on Tuesday 4 February 2020.

Application instructions and further guidance can be found on the Fight for Sight website.
