Our work

Sustainability is an important part of delivering high-quality healthcare. We work with members, partners and the wider health system to support sustainable ophthalmology and promote environmentally responsible practice. 

Our focus is to: 

• provide practical guidance for clinicians 
• support sustainable clinical pathways
• influence policy and standards through our membership of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change
• build awareness of the links between climate change and eye health.

Why sustainability matters 

Climate change affects health, including eye health. It can contribute to: 

• increased risk of ocular surface disease
• higher exposure to UV-related eye conditions 
• worsening air quality, affecting vulnerable patients 
• disruption to healthcare services and patient access.

Healthcare also has an environmental impact. As a high-volume specialty, ophthalmology relies on significant use of consumables, energy and resources. Small changes made across the system can have a meaningful impact. 

Supporting sustainable clinical practice 

Sustainable care often aligns with high-quality care and a better patient experience. Examples include: 

• reducing unnecessary appointments and interventions
• using lower-carbon treatment options where appropriate
• improving efficiency in clinics and theatres
• reducing waste and making best use of consumables.

Sustainability at the College 

We are also working to reduce the environmental impact of our own activities. This includes: 

• reducing travel through hybrid working and events
• reviewing procurement and supplier choices
• improving the energy efficiency of our building
• reducing paper use through digital processes
• encouraging sustainable travel through initiatives such as our Bike to Work scheme
• embedding sustainability into organisational decision-making.

We continue to review and strengthen our approach over time.
