Supporting the ophthalmology workforce

A sustainable ophthalmology workforce is essential to providing high-quality eye care.

Our work includes:

  • researching the size, shape and needs of the ophthalmology workforce
  • providing workforce planning information and resources
  • advocating for the workforce needed to meet current and future demand
  • supporting organisations with recruitment and job planning.

Our workforce advocacy

We use our workforce evidence and the experiences of ophthalmologists to highlight workforce pressures and advocate for the changes needed to build a sustainable ophthalmology workforce.

We work with governments, NHS organisations and other partners across the UK to influence workforce policy and planning and help ensure services have the people and skills they need to meet demand.

Advisory appointments committees and appointing ophthalmologists

We support organisations and ophthalmologists with job descriptions, job planning and Advisory Appointments Committees (AACs).

Find guidance on submitting job descriptions for approval, requesting College support for an AAC and volunteering as an AAC adviser.

Effective job planning should be realistic, evidence-based and developed collaboratively.

Job plans need to reflect the full range of clinical and professional work undertaken by ophthalmologists, as well as the workforce, facilities, administrative support and digital systems needed to deliver safe, high-quality patient care.
