Target Year of Achievement

In order to make progress from, for example, Year 1 of ophthalmic specialist training (OST1) to Year 2 (OST2), a trainee must be able to demonstrate, in their portfolio, that they have achieved an appropriate number of the 180 Curriculum Learning Outcomes. It is recognised that trainees learn at different rates so some flexibility should be allowed; each Deanery annual assessment panel will be able to exercise some discretion where a trainee is progressing more slowly. As a guide for panels, this document describes Target Years of Achievement (TYA) for each Learning Outcome. These are summarised as follows:

TYA	Explanation	Example
Year 1	This LO must normally be achieved during the first year of training and by the end of year 1 at the latest.	CA1 (Clinical history)
Year 2	This LO must normally be achieved during the first or second year of training and by the end of Year 2 at the latest. Failure to achieve a significant number of these LO before the end of Year 2 without mitigating circumstances may lead to a trainee being removed from the training programme.	PS10 (Corneal scraping)
Year 3	This LO must normally be achieved during the first three years of training and by the end of year 3 at the latest. Failure to achieve a significant number of these LO before Year 3 may require Year 3 to be repeated.	SS4 (Cataract) PS2 (Refraction)
Year X annual review	This LO must be achieved before the end of Year X and will be assessed annually thereafter.	Domains: AER (Attitudes, Ethics & Responsibilities) C (Communication)
Year 7	This LO must be achieved in order to complete the core curriculum. It is unlikely to be achieved in the first three years of training but may be achieved anytime during Years 4-7. Failure to achieve a significant number of LOs by the end of Year 6 may mean that a trainee has to forego trainee-selected components during Year 7.	SS11 (Temporal artery biopsy)
