RCOPHTH meeting

College Tutors

College Tutors have overall responsibility as lead trainers for the postgraduate training in their ophthalmology department. College Tutors are also the point of contact between trainers and the RCOphth.

As a College Tutor you have overall responsibility for the teaching of doctors in training in your ophthalmology department. As lead trainer you are an essential part of the delivery of a successful Ophthalmic Specialist Training programme. This is a highly valued role that ensures a close relationship between trainers and the RCOphth, as the body in charge of training and assessment of future ophthalmologists.

What are College Tutors responsible for?

College Tutors work with your ophthalmology unit to co-ordinate and lead a team of trainers. You can expect to liaise with Directors of Medical Education (DMEs) in your Trust, Training Programme Directors (TPDs) at the HEE local office(s)/Deanery, and the Regional Educational Advisors (REAs) appointed by the RCOphth.

You also work closely with Clinical Supervisors, who are responsible for the day-to-day supervision of trainees, and Educational Supervisors, responsible for the global supervision and support for trainees. You will have strategic oversight of training in your unit and work closely with the RCOphth to ensure training is taking place to a high standard and trainees are supported to progress in the OST programme.

Please refer to the role description and person specification for further details.
