Clinical guidance for ICU teams on preventing, recognising and managing eye complications in critically ill patients. Supports structured care, early escalation and reduced risk of corneal damage, infection and avoidable sight loss.

This clinical guidance supports ICU clinicians and nursing staff to deliver consistent eye care for critically ill patients. It focuses on protecting the ocular surface, identifying complications early and ensuring safe delivery of treatment.

Patients in ICU are at increased risk of eye damage due to reduced blinking, incomplete eyelid closure, sedation and mechanical ventilation. Without structured assessment and care, this can lead to exposure keratopathy, infection, corneal injury and permanent sight loss.

The guidance sets out practical protocols for eye assessment, lubrication, eyelid protection and infection management. It also outlines when to escalate concerns and seek ophthalmology input, helping prevent avoidable complications and improve patient outcomes.
