Overview of genomic medicine developments in the UK and their relevance to ophthalmology. Aimed at clinicians, researchers and service leaders to support adoption of personalised diagnosis and treatment approaches.

Genomic medicine is reshaping how healthcare is delivered across the UK. The development of a national Genomic Medicine Service in England is enabling more personalised approaches to diagnosis and treatment, with similar changes expected across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Ophthalmology is particularly well placed to benefit given the strong genetic basis of many eye conditions.

This guidance outlines the direction of travel for genomic services and highlights the importance of engagement from clinicians, researchers and those involved in commissioning and funding. It supports the integration of genomics into routine ophthalmic care while recognising that this is a rapidly evolving field and that national developments continue to shape practice.
