Retinal vein occlusion guideline exec summary (PDF)

Provides evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of retinal vein occlusion, reflecting advances in imaging and the growing use of intravitreal therapies.

This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of retinal vein occlusion, reflecting advances in imaging and the growing use of intravitreal therapies. It incorporates key changes from the 2021 consultation, including alignment with NICE technology appraisals, revised guidance on prophylactic PRP where follow-up is limited, and clearer treatment pathways for macular oedema and poor vision. It also confirms macular oedema and retinal neovascularisation as the main complications of Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO) and aligns the management of hemiretinal vein occlusion with Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO). The guidance supports consistent, safe service delivery but excludes rare or complex cases.
