Overview

  • Reflect on what will help you develop rapport quickly in sometimes brief interactions with patients and carers.
  • Consider what needs to happen in an interaction for rapport to develop. What qualities will a patient need to recognise in you (interest, insight, kindness, etc.) for them to trust you, and how will you demonstrate these?
  • Consider how you will maintain rapport with a patient in situations which are stressful for them, such has surgery.
  • Continuously develop your skills further; reflect on what could have gone better in an interaction, ask a colleague to observe you and feedback, collect patient feedback, consider courses.
