Overview

  • Be aware that patients may well not know what to expect, especially in theatre. Tell them what you are going to do.
  • Use language the patient will understand.
  • Consider carefully how you can best structure a conversation, using signposts to make it clear to the patient what you are discussing, e.g. “now your treatment plan.”
  • Ensure you sum up at the end of a consultation, check the patient’s understanding and allow time for questions.
  • Consider the value of a follow-up letter, email or phone-call to the patient.
  • Continuously develop your skills further; reflect on what could have gone better in an interaction, ask a colleague to observe you and feedback, collect patient feedback, consider courses.
