Overview

  • Consider the effect of not being able to communicate effectively with patients because of a language barrier or because of culture, hearing impairment, age or mental state.
  • Identify, where possible, barriers to communication before a consultation. Work out how you are going to rectify this, for example using an interpreter or inviting relatives or carers into the consultation.
  • Continuously develop your skills further; reflect on what could have gone better in an interaction, ask a colleague to observe you and feedback, collect patient feedback, consider courses.
