Guide for Authors

The purpose of Ophthalmopaedia is to provide easily accessible, quality assured information in an online encyclopaedic format. While this will be of major benefit to ophthalmic trainees, the desire is to involve the whole ophthalmic community both in contributing to and in using this resource.

Ophthalmopaedia provides information in succinct articles many examples of which are already published on it. Each article may be written by one or more authors. Ophthalmopaedia will also support images (pictures, animations or video); which may either appear interspersed within the sections of the article or set out in image galleries.

Any ophthalmologist may submit articles to Ophthalmopaedia, however those not on the Specialist register (e.g.Pre-CCT Trainees or non-consultant career grade doctors) who wish to contribute are required to have their article co-authored by a consultant/ post- CCT Ophthalmologist, before submission for editorial review.

Prospective authors can contact the editorial team whose contact details are available on the website, with their choice of topic so that the subject matter can be agreed between the author and the editor before work begins on the article. (Please check on Ophthalmopaedia platform that the topic you have chosen has not already been published. If you are interested in a topic please contact the relevant member of the editorial team for further advice). We encourage authors to use templates where feasible to generate articles to facilitate both standardisation of article structures as well as the upload process. Examples of these templates are available here.  We do realise however that not all topics/ articles may be suited to pre-existing templates and hence will try and accommodate different templates where necessary. Templates (section headings) should be agreed upon between the author and the editor at the outset (either one previously prepared by the editorial team or one developed specifically for the article by the author). Images (including pictures, animation or video) may be used within the article. Please see the separate image policy and guidelines developed by the department of health. Authors are expected to include a further reading list particularly those that offer an overview of the subject and appropriate supporting references where applicable.

The lead author will submit the article electronically as a Microsoft word file to the editorial team for review. The editor team will then undertake a peer review process and upon acceptance, will then arrange for the article to be uploaded onto the Ophthalmopaedia. Authors who wish to submit articles containing previously published work which is subject to copyright must provide the written permission of the Publisher before submitting the article.  The name of the author and any co-authors will be cited with the article. The submission process is quite similar to that followed by scientific journals.

Keeping the Ophthalmopaedia up to date

The Editorial team may approach the author from time to time to arrange a suitable review date for each article. Fast-moving subjects may require more frequent review. The original author will be invited to update the article. All articles will be archived so that a historical record is kept.

Recognising the effort

Trainees who author articles can cite these at their annual training review. Each published article will have a searchable online citation. Seniors who write articles or who are involved in the review or editorial process may claim CPD points if appropriate.
