Quality improvement in neuro-ophthalmology
The College recommendations for supporting information in the field of neuro-ophthalmology are as follows:
Ophthalmologists whose practice includes neuro-ophthalmology may wish to consider the following optional topics for audit:
- Perceptions by patients and carers of the quality of care provided by the neuro-ophthalmology service
- Management of giant cell arteritis
- Management of optic neuritis
Many neuro-ophthalmological conditions require the use of imaging and a range of other tests, periods of observation, or an empirical trial of treatment to make or confirm a diagnosis. Retrospective review of the accuracy of diagnosis is therefore an important topic for audit in this field.
A significant proportion of patients in neuro-ophthalmological practice will require multi-disciplinary input to their diagnosis and management. Supporting information in this area of practice may therefore reflect the performance of the team or the service rather than the performance of an individual.
Ophthalmologists may wish to include case reviews of individual complex patients as supporting information for appraisal.
Ophthalmologists who undertake optic nerve sheath fenestration or surgery for nystagmus may review the outcomes of these procedures at appraisal.
