GMC registration
You must register with the GMC before you can undertake direct patient care in the UK. The evidence required depends on your medical qualifications and circumstances.

We use the term international doctor for doctors who do not have settled status or the right of indefinite residence in the UK, regardless of where they obtained their primary medical qualification.
Start here: understand the three main routes
Most users will be looking for one of these routes:
Join a UK ophthalmology training programme
If you want to complete formal ophthalmic training in the UK, you will usually need to apply through the national recruitment process.
Specialist registration without UK training
If you are already fully or partly trained outside the UK, you may be able to join the UK Specialist Register via the Portfolio pathway, by demonstrating the knowledge, skills and experience required.
All doctors who want to practise medicine in the UK must register with the GMC before providing direct patient care.
Your application route depends on your qualifications. The GMC provides the most up-to-date guidance on:
- acceptable primary medical qualifications
- evidence of knowledge and skills
- English language requirements
- registration routes for doctors with EEA, Swiss and other non-UK qualifications

- where your primary medical qualification was awarded
- whether you already hold GMC registration
- whether you want a UK training post or recognition of existing experience
- whether you need immigration or visa support as well as professional registration
