Ophthalmic local training (OLT) supports locally employed ophthalmology doctors to develop their knowledge, skills and experience through a structured training framework while working in trusts and hospital eye departments. The framework supports doctors who may later apply for specialist registration through the Portfolio pathway route.
Who OLT is for
OLT is designed for:
- locally employed ophthalmology doctors
- specialty, specialist and associate specialist (SAS) doctors.
OLT supports workforce development in ophthalmology by helping doctors progress in a structured way towards the standard expected of a consultant ophthalmologist in the UK.
How training is structured
OLT uses the same curriculum as ophthalmic specialist training (OST). This means participants work towards the same learning outcomes used in UK ophthalmology training.
The curriculum sets out the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours expected of a consultant ophthalmologist and includes the ability to:
- assess patients and interpret investigations
- manage clinical care using clinical and scientific knowledge
- develop practical and surgical skills
- communicate effectively and work professionally
- make sound clinical decisions and judgements
- manage information safely and confidentially
- contribute to teaching, health promotion and continuing professional development
