The Portfolio pathway route is an alternative route to joining the General Medical Council (GMC) specialist register in ophthalmology. It is for doctors who have not completed a GMC-approved training programme but can show they have the knowledge, skills and experience needed to practise as an eligible specialist in the UK.
Who can apply?
You may be eligible to apply if you have either:
- completed at least six months of specialist training, or
- been awarded a specialist qualification in ophthalmology
The GMC sets the eligibility rules and application requirements.
How the process works
- You prepare your evidence and submit your application to the GMC.
- The GMC sends the application to The Royal College of Ophthalmologists for assessment.
- At least two College assessors review the evidence and make a recommendation.
- The College submits its evaluation to the GMC.
- The GMC makes the final decision.
The GMC’s role
The GMC manages the Portfolio pathway process. Applications are made directly to the GMC, not to the College.
The GMC receives applications, sends them for specialty assessment, and makes the final legal decision on whether specialist registration is granted. The GMC may also request further clarification before making a decision.
The College’s role
The College assesses applications received from the GMC and makes a recommendation based on the evidence provided.
A minimum of two assessors review each application. Following assessment, the College completes an evaluation form and returns its recommendation to the GMC.
The College can provide general advice about the type of evidence required. However, we do not:
- review applications before submission
- advise whether an application is likely to succeed
- arrange additional training to address gaps in evidence or experience
