The Ophthalmic Practitioner Training (OPT) programme is based on the Ophthalmic Common Clinical Competency Framework (OCCCF). It helps ophthalmology departments develop their workforce and increase service capacity.
The programme is delivered across four clinical areas, with training at three levels. Learners receive an OPT certificate for each level they complete. A Level 3 OPT certificate can form a major part of the clinical pillar of a master’s degree in Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP).
OPT is workplace-based and delivered under the supervision of local trainers. It is a competency-based programme, with standards set out in the curriculum and assessed through evidence collected in a portfolio. Learners build competence through self-directed learning, workplace teaching, clinical experience, supervision and formative assessment.
