Supervision and support
Ophthalmic Practitioner Training (OPT) programme learners work with a range of trainers and supervisors. These roles can be carried out by professionals from any of the four professions involved in the programme.
Training for these roles is available through OPT Training the Trainers courses.
Clinical supervisors
Clinical supervisors are responsible for learning and patient care during each clinical session. A learner will usually have more than one clinical supervisor.
Educational supervisors
Educational supervisors support the learner’s overall progress and make sure their portfolio is completed to the required standard.
Unit OPT leads
Unit OPT leads organise training in their unit and make sure learners have access to the right clinical and educational opportunities.
Regional OPT leads
Regional OPT leads are part of the RCOphth regional team and uphold the standards of the OPT Programme in their region. They do this by:
- confirming learner eligibility and training opportunities
- reviewing portfolios, assessments and supporting materials
- supporting trainers and supervisors
Each region has an OPT lead. For up-to-date information about who holds this role in your area, contact your Regional Education Advisor.
