What the OST curriculum covers
Training takes place through a combination of formal teaching and supervised workplace learning. The OST curriculum covers clinical practice – including urgent eye care, outpatient clinics, on-calls, ward rounds, theatre, community work – and is structured around seven domains of practice which are mapped to the GMC’s generic professional capabilities framework.
There are six non-clinical domains and one patient management (PM) domain. Each domain is divided into four levels of competence, which describe the standard training ophthalmologists need to evidence by defined critical advancement points. Â
Additionally, the PM domain is divided into 12 special interest areas (SIAs).
