Professor Harminder Dua, former president of the RCOphth, has been appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for Services to Ophthalmology.

The College is delighted to have one of our members recognised in this way and it is a testament to Professor Dua’s achievements in the field. His term as ninth president is notable for the way in which he encouraged cooperation across the ocular sector and personally engaged with members of the optometry profession and representatives of the charitable sector. One achievement of lasting impact was the inclusion of an eye health indicator in the Public Health Outcomes Framework. Harminder also had a pivotal role in submitting a £1m bid for a National Ophthalmology Audit that will dramatically improve the information on cataract surgery outcomes available to surgeons and to the public.

Harminder commented on his appointment, “The CBE is a recognition of the work of the teams, individuals and institutions that have influenced my career, of which my association with The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, especially as president from 2011-14, is greatly valued.”
