Julie Silvestri, Clinical Director Ophthalmology Belfast, receives CBE honour

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists is delighted to share the news that Professor Giuliana Silvestri, has been honoured with a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the first of the King’s Birthday Honours list 2023.

Prof Silvestri, Clinical Director Ophthalmology, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and Clinical Lead, NI Eyecare Network, received the award in recognition of services to Ophthalmology and Eyecare in Northern Ireland.

Julie, as she is known to her colleagues, has recently rejoined the RCOphth Council as Regional Representative for Northern Ireland.  Julie commented,

‘I am delighted to receive this award for my work in Ophthalmology. My passion has been to change pathways and services in Northern Ireland to deliver a more efficient, joined up and accessible service for patients. In addition, I have been fortunate to be able to pursue my research into the genetics of inherited retinal degeneration and age-related macular degeneration.

I accept this award on behalf of the Ophthalmology Clinical and Management Teams in all Trusts, the Commissioners and Community Optometry in Northern Ireland, all who have worked tirelessly to shape this Vision. My thanks also to all my research collaborators in Queen’s University Belfast, Ireland and internationally. Thank you to my family for their constant support and encouragement.’
