This year the College has awarded Honorary Fellowships to Professor Peter Scanlon and Professor Sobha Sivaprasad.
Honorary Fellowship is the College’s highest accolade, recognising individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to ophthalmology, eye care and the advancement of the specialty.
Professor Peter Scanlon
Professor Peter Scanlon is a full-time NHS consultant medical ophthalmologist in Gloucestershire. He has been clinical lead of the NHS England Diabetic Eye Screening Programme since its inception in 2003 and currently serves as a clinical professional advisor for NHS England.
Alongside his clinical leadership, he is Associate Professor and Medical Tutor at Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford, and visiting professor at the University of Gloucestershire.
His work has played a pivotal role in the development and delivery of diabetic eye screening across England, helping to improve patient outcomes and shape national practice.
Professor Sobha Sivaprasad
Professor Sobha Sivaprasad is an internationally recognised clinician scientist and research leader whose work has had a significant impact on retinal research and clinical practice worldwide.
She is Professor of Retinal Clinical Research at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Director of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Moorfields Clinical Research Facility and Vascular Theme Co-Lead for the NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre. She also served as Chair of the College’s Scientific Committee from 2019 to 2025 and was Editor-in-Chief of Eye from 2018 to 2025.
Over more than two decades, Professor Sivaprasad has led translational research, multicentre clinical trials and international collaborations that have advanced retinal care. She has secured more than £50 million in competitive research funding, published over 695 peer-reviewed papers and supervised the development of future generations of clinical researchers. Her work continues to drive innovation in areas including artificial intelligence, imaging biomarkers, precision medicine and equitable access to research.
Professor Scanlon and Professor Sivaprasad will receive their Honorary Fellowships at the College’s Admission Ceremony on Friday 4 September.
