As the voice of the profession, we work closely with our members, partners across the eye care sector and policymakers to improve public policy so key challenges facing ophthalmology services across the UK are recognised and addressed.
Since our last roundup, we:
- Led a joint call for the national standardisation of electronic health records in eye care, which we believe is essential to improve services, outcomes and patient experience.
- Responded to and published seven reflections on the government’s 10 Year Health Plan – a document that sets out a vision for NHS reform.
- Welcomed and suggested improvements to NHS England’s new WLMDS demographics data. With ophthalmology having the highest number of patients waiting over 18 weeks for a first appointment, we also reiterated our call for the specialty to be prioritised in the forthcoming 10 Year Workforce Plan.
- Heard our Devon case study cited by Iqbal Mohamed MP during a Westminster debate on Glaucoma Awareness. MPs including Shockat Adam and Helen Morgan Helen joined our call for greater transparency on waiting lists for follow-up appointments.
- Reviewed the General Medical Council’s 2025 National Training Survey findings to enhance our understanding of the experiences of resident doctors in ophthalmology so that we can better advocate on their behalf.
