This section contains the OST Curriculum and associated documents, which were approved by the GMC in June 2024 and took effect in August 2024.
OST Curriculum 2024 employs high-level, overarching learning outcomes to describe the skills, knowledge and behaviours required by ophthalmologists in training. It assesses overall capabilities in both clinical and generic professional skills.
The learning outcomes are mapped to the GMC’s Generic Professional Capabilities framework.

The curriculum employs seven domains of practice framed around the Generic Professional Capabilities (GPCs) framework. One of these domains, Patient Management (PM) is divided into twelve clinical Special Interest Areas (SIAs).
The Assessment Strategy underpins the delivery of the OST Curriculum.
The Assessment Blueprint should be used in conjunction with the OST Curriculum and Assessment Strategy.
The syllabi for patient management and all other domains are available both by SIA and by Level.
The handbook contains full details and guidance about the assessments required by Curriculum 2024, including the GMC-approved assessment tools.
This document is intended to give ARCP panels consistent guidance on the curriculum requirements for each ST year.
This document, while not formally part of the curriculum, contains links to nationally agreed guidance and information about reflective practice. This is a key underpinning concept of the OST curriculum.
