MSD has informed the Royal College of Ophthalmologists that there are now a limited number of preservative-free (PF) Trusopt® (dorzolamide hydrochloride) eye drops presently available in the UK. In light of this and the fact that it is a limited supply, The College would like to advise you of the recommended best use of this medication.
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists welcomes the decision by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to recommend 125 micrograms Ocriplasmin intravitreal injection as an option for the treatment of vitreomacular traction (VMT) in adults who have either stage II full-thickness macular holes (FTMH) with a diameter of ≤ 400um and/or severe symptoms.
It is hoped that the Guidelines for Thyroid Eye Disease (2015) will facilitate early diagnosis and better treatment of patients with this disease. It is estimated that there are about 2,500 new cases of Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) every year in the UK. The figures have declined over the past 10-20 years for reasons that are unclear.
These guidelines (July 2015) reflect changes in treatments, since the 2010 Interim RVO Guidelines. The guidelines provide evidence-based, clinical advice for the management of different aspects of RVO. The scope is limited to current diagnostic tools, management and service set-up and delivery to facilitate delivery of optimal care.
The College recognises that botulinum toxin and surgical treatment for strabismus* are important procedures that are performed in children and adults to promote, improve or re-establish binocular function, manage diplopia and restore ocular alignment and balance. Surgical intervention (including botulinum toxin injections) performed to achieve these aims is thus not a cosmetic procedure and does not fall under the GMC guidance for cosmetic surgery. Commissioning pathways for the management of squints reflect this.
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) has welcomed the announcement that the NHS in England will receive an extra £5.4 billion over the next six months to support its response to COVID-19 and help tackle waiting lists. This includes £1.5 billion to manage the elective surgery backlog (including £500 million capital funding), with delays to cataract surgery identified by government as a particular concern.
