College Tutors

College Tutors have overall responsibility as lead trainers for the postgraduate training in their ophthalmology department. College Tutors are also the point of contact between trainers and the College.

As a College Tutor you have overall responsibility for the teaching of doctors in training in your ophthalmology department. As lead trainer you are an essential part of the delivery of a successful Ophthalmic Specialist Training programme . This is a highly valued role that ensures a close relationship between trainers and the College.

What are College Tutors responsible for?

Within the unit, CTs lead and work closely with a team of clinical supervisors (responsible for day-to-day supervision of resident doctors) and educational supervisors (responsible for the global supervision and support of resident doctors).

Beyond the unit, CTs will liaise with Directors of Medical Education (DMEs) in their trust, Training Programme Directors (TPDs) and Regional Education Advisers (REAs) appointed by the College.

You will have strategic oversight of training in your unit and work closely with the College to ensure training is taking place to a high standard and resident doctors are supported to progress in their training.

All newly appointed College Tutors must attend our College Tutor Training Day in the first six months of appointment. During this training session you will learn about the main duties of a College Tutor and discuss the delivery and assessment of training.
