Collaboration between The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Bausch + Lomb ensures access to latest cutting-edge equipment for phaco surgery Five Stellaris Elite™ vision enhancement systems installed as part of Royal College’s Surgical Skills Centre.

Bausch + Lomb, a leading innovator in eye health, and The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) announced a multi-year collaboration to ensure that trainees and experienced surgeons have access to the latest, cutting-edge equipment as part of simulation training for cataract and retinal surgery. Bausch + Lomb will have access to our surgical skills centre four times a year as part of the collaboration.

Five Stellaris Elite™ systems have been installed at the Royal College so that trainees and ophthalmologists can practice their surgical techniques in the safety of a simulation setting using state-of-the-art equipment available in the UK. The systems form part of the Royal College’s simulation suite which is used by 500 trainees every year to master skills before in vivo training, for experienced ophthalmologists to refine their surgical proficiency and for train-the-trainer style tuition.

Fiona Spencer, Chair of RCOphth. Training, comments, “The Royal College of Ophthalmologists has pioneered the use of simulation training at our state-of-the-art skills centre and we are delighted to have worked with Bausch + Lomb on installing new high-tech equipment. This offers all our members the opportunity to maintain their surgical skills, especially at a time when many trainees have not been able to access training sessions during the pandemic.”

Accessing simulation opportunities means that RCOphth. trainees and consultants can build back confidence and maintain high standards of surgical skills after absences from work or restrictions placed on services and training from the pandemic.

The Stellaris Elite™ vision enhancement system is a combined platform intended for the emulsification and removal of cataracts as well as anterior and posterior segment vitrectomy. By automatically reacting to crucial procedural factors as they occur, Stellaris Elite™ empowers cataract surgeons with enhanced control over every moment of a cataract procedure. From routine  procedures to the most challenging of cases, it enables users to focus on the intricacies of their technique, rather than the parameters of a surgical system.

David Lockington, Consultant Ophthalmologist in Glasgow and a Simulation Lead for The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, said “Ophthalmic simulation leads to safer experiences for the trainee, the trainer and, most importantly, the patient. Practicing on the latest available technology not only means that trainees can finesse their skills, but they are familiar with the versatility and features of the equipment they will find in a real surgical environment with support and advice provided both by clinical educators and experts from the equipment manufacturer.”

In addition to the installation of five Stellaris Elite™ systems, Bausch + Lomb will also provide customer service and in-person support to ensure that the systems are maintained and always available for Royal College courses.

Philip Leech, Business Unit Director – Surgical at Bausch + Lomb said: “The Stellaris Elite™ is a flexible and versatile platform that can adapt to a surgeon’s needs and technique; from day one of learning, through to them qualifying and beyond. We are delighted that both trainees and experienced surgeons will be able to simulate procedures at the Royal College with our latest systems and that we are able to contribute our experience to get the best from the platform at any stage in their surgical career.”
