Responding to NHS England’s report on phase 1 of the Medical Training Review, which was published last week, Vikas Chadha, Chair of the College’s Training Committee, said:

“It is encouraging that many of the challenges facing ophthalmology training, which we highlighted in our submission, have been recognised in NHS England’s initial review of medical training.

“In our response, we called for an increase in ophthalmology training places, supported by appropriate resourcing for trainers, to address unmet patient need and rising competition ratios. It is therefore welcome that the review recommends tackling bottlenecks in training, backed by a strategy to strengthen support for educators. This underscores the importance of ensuring that the forthcoming 10-Year Workforce Plan includes a clear timeline for expanding ophthalmology training places.

“We are also pleased that the review acknowledges the specific challenges within ophthalmology when recommending that the independent sector should be required to provide training opportunities for NHS-funded procedures. This is an area where the College has long advocated for change, and while progress has been made, further action is needed – highlighted in our recent research report – including enabling cataract training placements for SAS doctors as well as resident doctors.

“The review also raises a range of other vital issues, such as the need for greater flexibility in training and improved progression pathways for SAS and locally employed doctors. We look forward to working with NHS England and other partners to contribute to the reform of postgraduate medical training, ensuring that ophthalmology remains equipped to meet the needs of patients now and in the future.”
