The Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Examinations department is pleased to announce the first Dr Sadhu Ram Gupta MBE Award for International (non-UK) Examination Candidates.

Dr Dhulfiqar Gheni Abed of Baghdad, Iraq, is the 2021 winner, having received the highest score in the July 2021 Part 2 FRCOphth Written examination.

This brand-new annual award is intended for international candidates who take our FRCOphth exams. The Dr Sadhu Ram Gupta MBE Award was presented in 2021 to the best performing non-UK examination candidate who had completed the Part 2 FRCOphth Written examination.

The award will be given to the best performing non-UK examination candidate who has completed the Part 2 FRCOphth Oral examination beginning in 2022.

Only candidates who reside permanently outside of the United Kingdom and take the exam there are eligible for the award.

The award includes a monetary prize of £1000 (one thousand pounds sterling) as well as a medal.

The winner is announced in January of each year for the previous years’ worth of eligible exams, and the winner in January 2023 will be the highest-ranking candidate from all overseas sittings of Part 2 FRCOphth Oral examinations in 2022, which will be held in Singapore, India, Egypt, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Dr Abed deserves our heartfelt congratulations on this outstanding achievement!
