Applications are now invited for the RED Trust research bursary, which supports an ophthalmologist in training to undertake an epidemiological study of a rare eye condition through the British Ophthalmological Surveillance Unit (BOSU).

The primary aim of this bursary is to help trainees gain confidence and experience in research. It provides an accessible entry point into conducting a national study, developing research skills, and contributing to the understanding of rare eye diseases and conditions.

The award will be judged on:

  1. the applicant’s potential to develop their research skills and experience
  2. the quality of the written application
  3. the suitability of the topic for surveillance
  4. the likely impact of the study on ophthalmic practice.

Applicants with little or no previous research experience are particularly encouraged to apply. While those with more research experience are not excluded, the focus of this award is on fostering new research skills rather than extending an already established research career.

Suitable conditions for BOSU studies are those with a predicted annual incidence of fewer than 5 per million (approximately 300 cases per annum in the UK), with topics expecting between 75 and 125 cases per year considered especially appropriate for this award.

The BOSU team can support trainees with their applications for the RED Trust bursary. Please contact Barny Foot at [email protected] or 07808 581659 for an informal discussion and to request application guidelines.

Closing date for applications is 5pm on Monday 24 November.
