We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Bernie Chang to the office of President of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

He is currently a consultant ophthalmologist with a special interest in Oculoplastics, Lacrimal and Orbital Surgery in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Bernie has been serving the College in a number of roles over the last 16 years, from a regional representative for Yorkshire, Honorary Secretary, Vice President and Chair of the Professional Standards Committee; also chairing the College’s External Reviews Committee and a subsection editor for the Eye journal for over four years.

Bernie’s clinical experience includes serving as expert advisor (devices) for MHRA, BOPSS (British Oculoplastics Surgery Society) committee and the BMA Ophthalmic Group Committee; past member of the Training Interface Group on Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery and continues with links with Malaysia (Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology in UNIMAS) and Trinidad.

Bernie commented on his election, “I certainly come into the office of president at a very challenging time, with the pandemic very much focusing everyone’s mind on recovery of ophthalmology services for patients. This also means there is every opportunity to put into practice the new models of care, continue to use innovate technology and to further support members. I follow Mike Burdon who has achieved so much during his term for the profession and most recently in responding to the pandemic on behalf of members. I look forward to working with the Trustees, College Officers and staff at the College and continue to continue the good work.”

Bernie will be in post for three years.
