The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) has endorsed the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) statement in favour of a research-active NHS, alongside numerous other medical colleges, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, and National Institute for Health Research.

The statement, launched at the RCP 2019 annual conference, sets out a vision for research as key to patient care. ‘Every clinician working in the NHS should be supported to become research active. High-quality research in the NHS is everyone’s responsibility and a core part of clinical care’.

Additionally, the statement includes recommendations for trusts, doctors, patients, and research facilitators to make the vision of a research-led NHS a reality. Implementation of these recommendations will facilitate an NHS in which doctors’ time is protected to undertake research, patients are given ample opportunity to participate in and benefit from clinical trials, and the UK is able to attract research investment for the wider economy.
