This year’s Ulverscroft David Owen Award recipients are Dr Siegfried Karl Wagner and colleagues, for their study ‘Development and international validation of custom engineered and code-free deep-learning models for detection of plus disease in retinopathy of prematurity’.
We are now inviting applications for this postgraduate research award, a collaboration between the College and Glaucoma UK, which provides up to £100,000 to facilitate research into glaucoma.
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists is delighted to announce the continuation of the Ulverscroft David Owen Awards. The Ulverscroft Foundation gives financial help to Universities which carry out research into the causes of eye diseases; funds eye clinics, hospitals, schools, libraries and other organisations which help visually impaired people.
The Keeler Scholarship 2022 has been jointly awarded to Jared Ching and Arthur Okonkwo. The biennial award, sponsored by Keeler Limited, is made to College fellows, members or affiliates to enable them to study, research or acquire special skills, knowledge or experience to benefit ophthalmology in the UK.
Girish Chandra came from modest beginnings in India to further his ophthalmic career in the UK in the 1960’s. He subsequently worked in numerous countries in North America and Asia. He recognises that the chance to train in the UK is a valuable and cherished opportunity, and he hopes that this award will facilitate this for future ophthalmologists.
Congratulations to Dr Giovanni Montesano, winner of the 2023 Glaucoma UK/RCOphth Research Award. He will receive £96,082 to fund his project “A path to personalised glaucoma care – mapping clinical trial and real-world outcomes to individuals”.
The Seed Award supports a diverse portfolio of research projects with a clear pathway to patient benefit. All research should aim focus on eventual diagnostic, prevention or treatment solutions applicable to eye conditions. The maximum value of this grant is £15,000 with a maximum term of 1 year. RCOphth would like to congratulate Dr Ian MacCormick, clinical lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, and his senior author Simon Harding from the University of Liverpool, for winning the Ulverscroft David Owen prize for the best-published paper titled: “How does blood-retinal barrier breakdown relate to death and disability in pediatric cerebral malaria?”
Jugnoo Rahi, RCOphth Chair Academic Sub-committee, joins 12 other Fellows working within ophthalmology and vision sciences who have been elected since the Academy was founded 25 years ago. As well as being the first female ophthalmologist to be elected a Fellow, she is the first to be both a paediatric ophthalmologist and epidemiologist.
The 2023 Zakarian Awards are now open for submissions. Three awards will be offered to ophthalmologists who are members of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, to gain experience and undertake ophthalmic and vision research. The RCOphth Zakarian Awards are designed to support three categories of researchers.
